25! Grandma Lucy's ($5)
Grandma Lucy's donated some samples to the dog event I put on the fall and Maverick fell in love with them. They are an amazing company and the treats are very yummy!

25 Puppy Things of Christmas- # 22 & 23
Almost done...
22. Tennis Balls ($3-8)
What dog doesn't love tennis balls? I know my dog does!! And in my house you can never have enough tennis balls. You can stock up on these pretty much everywhere and they will make a great addition to your dogs stocking!
23. Thundershirt ($39.95)
I am very lucky that my dog does not have needs that would require a Thundershirt to help but I am glad dogs have that option available. I have heard from real users that this is a great tool to help with all kinds of anxiety issues for pets.

25 Puppy Things of Christmas- #18 & 19
And the Countdown Continues...
18. Collection of Plastic Toys (Price Varies)
I just thought this was a great idea for the Summer time. Take a collection of dog appropriate plastic toys and freeze them in a huge block of ice. The ice will keep the dog cool during the really hot summer months but finding the toys will keep the dog entertained. What a great fun treat for the Summer!
19. Plastic Swimming Pool ($10)
These can be great play tools for your dog all year long. In the summer you can fill the pool with water for your dog to play in and during the winter you can fill the pool with sand and bury toys in it. This way it gives them a place to dig and find fun toys along the way.

Time is ticking away till the big day next week and if you are still looking for little treats for your dog I found a few more things for you...
11. Chuck It Ball Launcher ($11.99)
We have one of these for Maverick. If your dog likes to play fetch I HIGHLY recommend this toy. It will allow you to throw the ball farther and does not wear out your arm. These can be purchased at any pet store.
12. Seat Cover (prices vary)
This is a real car saver. The one we bought at PetSmart has a rubber bottom to catch any liquids plus it helps it not slip around the car. Oh and it is machine washable!
13. Snuggie! (prices vary by size)
I don't think I will get Maverick one of these because he will just try to eat it but I know plenty of dogs that love to wear clothes. This will make a great present for clothes loving pets!

25 Puppy Things of Christmas- #5,6,7
Time to continue our countdown to great puppy presents you can get before the big day!
5. $12.99
This is a great toy for your dog because it is an interactive toy. You place treats in the pods and then slide them together. Your dog has to play and learn to get the treats out. This would be a great occupier for puppies or keeping older dogs minds sharp. Available at PetSmart.
6. $3.99-15.99
We give our dog Maverick antler chews because they are a better alternative than rawhides. Antler chews are much harder for dogs to chew up! There is a variety of sizes and animals to choose from based on your dogs size. These are available at Dr. Foster Smith.
7. $85 (for my version)

25 Puppy Things of Christmas- #4
I am very excited about the Puppy Things of Christmas for today. It took me a couple of minutes to believe this product even existed when I first saw it. But then it made sense because my dog just loves beer when it spills on the ground.
4. $19.99
I love that someone has made a dog friendly beer that has no alcohol in it. So what does it have in it? Here is the description from the website:
What’s in Bowser Beer?
USDA beef or chicken.
Malt barley (full of B-vitamins) –just like in your beer.
Glucosamine for joint health.
What’s NOT in Bowser Beer:
Alcohol or carbonation.
Hops, which can be toxic to dogs.
Commercial broth, which contains loads of salt, fat,MSG,onions and meat of unknown origin.
Serving Suggestions:
Straight out of the bottle
Pour it over dry kibble
Flavor the water bowl
Pour over crushed ice for a cold, crunchy treat
I thought this was a pretty cool idea for Christmas so make sure to order you dog some here.

Doggie of the Month Winner! October 2012
Congrats to Phoebe and Rico for being the Doggie of the Month winner for October! Here is what their mom had to say about them...
Rico LOVES treats and water. However, he refuses to eat Okra.
-Andrea
Congrats Andrea! Your Doggie of the Month Prize is on its way!
Think your dog should be Doggie of the Month? Email southerndogsblog@gmail.com and tell me a little bit about your dog, why they should be doggie of the month and send a picture. Contest for November ends November 30th.
Phoebe is a 14 year old Yorkie and
Rico is a 7.5 year old Pekepoo.
Rico LOVES treats and water. However, he refuses to eat Okra.
Phoebe LOVES treats, water, scraps,
and everything. She dislikes when she is not center of attention.
They should be Doggie of the month
because they are truly my husband and I's best friends. Rico sleeps on my
husbands pillow every night with him. Phoebe follows me everywhere and falls
asleep wherever a blanket is. We love them--and couldn't imagine life without
them.

Loud Barker
I love Maverick to death, but he has become a big-time barker since “discovering” his voice…a loud and unnecessary barker (most of the time). So MJ and I have done some research about barking and all of the advice that we’ve found say the same things to help your dog stop barking:
1. Teach your dog the “quiet” and “speak” commands
2. Distract your dog when they start barking
3. Encourage your dog to carry a toy in its mouth for walks (if they bark at people)
4. Try a mouth closing leash/collar
I have been trying to teach Maverick the “quiet” command since the little guy decided he sounded manly when he barks. So far, we’ve had no luck with that command. We also try to distract him when he is barking, but I guess barking is more fun for him than anything else we are trying to distract him with. The third suggestion does not really apply since he does most of his annoying barking indoors and rarely barks while he is being walked. The same applies to the suggestion of a mouth closure leash/collar.
So…now what? There are several reasons that dogs bark:
1. To warn of danger or intruder
2. Boredom
3. Excess energy to burn
4. Natural barking breed
I think that for the most part, Maverick is just bored and has gotten used to barking at everything now. He may also be a natural barking breed of dog. Either way it is time to step up the effort to curb the barking!
Any suggestions?

Hoooowl-O-Ween!
I know that here in Charleston were several Halloween-themed pet parties happening last weekend and more scheduled for this upcoming weekend. They are being hosted by grooming salons, doggie day cares, and pet specialty stores. Here are a few events that will be happening this coming weekend:
Dawg Tired and Cat Naps Too: they will be holding their annual Halloween party this Saturday, October 27th from 10am – noon at their facility on John’s Island. They will have games, treats, and prizes!
Hairy Winston and Pet Helpers: Hairy Winston is teaming up with Pet Helpers to host their annual costume contest this Saturday, October 27th starting at 1 pm. The contest will be at the Harry Winston boutique (Palmetto Grande Drive in Mt Pleasant). There is a $10 donation required to enter the contest and all of the money will go to benefit the Pet Helpers shelter.
My Three Dogs Howl-O-Ween Party: My Three Dogs will be holding its party full of treats, food, and their costume contest on Sunday, October 28th from 4-6 pm. They are located on HWY 17 in Mt. Pleasant. Owners and pets are welcome to participate!
Unfortunately, our weekend is jammed-packed and we will not be able to make any of these events but reading about these events made me wonder what cute Halloween costumes are out there for our puppies. Maverick will not be wearing any costumes because he will simply rip them off and/or try to eat anything that we try to dress him in, but that’s not going to stop me from trying to find the cutest outfits out there!
Here are a few of my favorites…
Dinosaur |
Captain America |
Princess Leia |

September Doggie of the Month WINNER!!
Congratulations to Rusty Hentschel of Houston, TX!
Here is what Rusty's owners had to say about him...
Meet Rusty.
Rusty is a 13 year old Border Collie. Rusty was abandoned in Dallas, Texas when his previous owners left him in a garage when they moved away.He was fostered through Texas Border Collie Rescue and was adopted by Mark Hentschel at 6 months old.Rusty coloring is unusual for a border collie and is called a saddle back.
Rusty began competing in Frisbee at a year and half, he has also competed in agility and herding.
Rusty’s passion though is flyball. In his youth Rusty was one of the fastest dogs in the country. He has travelled all over the country competing in flyball. He retired two years ago and received a special award from the Nation Flyball Association called Iron dog for competing ten consecutive years. When he retired at over ten years old he was still running flyball faster than most dogs.
Rusty is a beautiful dog that is all heart. He loves all games and is sweet and kind to all people he meets as well as other dogs.
Everyone that meets Rusty instantly likes him for his sweet personality.
Rusty was diagnosed with inoperable cancer a few months ago and does not have long to be with us on this earth.
By most dogs standards he has had an awesome life, meet thousands of dogs and people in his various competitive sports.
Rusty lives his life in the country enjoying what time he has to be with us on this earth.
Rusty running his last flyball game when he retired.
Thanks,
Dianna and Mark
Ok Rusty, be on the look out for your prize from Southern Dogs!

BarkWorld Expo
It is almost time for the BarkWorld Expo! For those of you who do not know what I am talking about, the BarkWorld Expo is a conference in Atlanta, GA for pet bloggers and users of social media. This year’s expo will be held October 25-27 and it promises to deliver an amazing schedule. There will be speakers from Twitter, ASPCA, and several other organizations. This is a great chance for bloggers and social media users to get together and share great ideas on how to develop their business and blogs. It is also a great place to network! Some of this year’s sponsors include Petco, Yahoo, and IAMS. Get more information about the conference here.
This is said to be an amazing conference. For those of you who are going, I hope you have a great time!
Unfortunately, I do not have plans on attending this year. If anyone out there wants to sponsor my trip, please contact me at southerndogsblog@gmail.com. Hey…a girl can dream, right?

To-Go Bowl
The big day is finally here and we are taking Maverick on his first long car trip. He is off to Tampa, FL to visit his Mimi and Pa. I am very excited about this trip because my dad (Pa) hasn’t seen Maverick since he was about 3 months old. Being the overzealous puppy mom that I am, I logged onto several websites including the SPCAs, and made sure I have packed everything that they told me to bring to ensure a smooth trip. I gotta tell you…the most important thing I saw that I didn’t remember was his medical records. The notebook containing his medical records, shot records, and insurance information (yes we have pet insurance) is now packed in his bag.
I have Maverick’s big bag packed with his food/water bowls, food, toys, and treats but I also have a car bag packed. This has travel version of all of this which will be very handy in the car. I was looking around on the internet this morning to make sure there wasn’t extra info out there that I was missing and I came across this bowl.
How stinking cool is this y’all? It is a bowl that fits in your cup holder. It comes with a splash guard and a lid. The bowl is detachable from the base so it can sit flat on the floor. Plus you can store dry food or treats in the base. This is a very versatile bowl. It can easily go from the car to hotel or park. Now I know why this bowl has won some awesome awards!!
The bowl is made by Furry Travelers and you can buy it here.

Maverick Graduates!
I just want to say CONGRATS to Maverick for graduating his Intermediate Training class at PetSmart!!
His last class was last night and he even won the “spin” contest. I am so proud of him. In the Puppy/Beginner Training class we went through earlier this year, he learned the basic commands like sit, stay, and lay down. This class was similar in that he was learning to do all of these things with distractions built in. Let me tell y’all…he was easily distracted! He is 8 months old today, so he still has some growing up to do but he is doing great with his training overall. Now I just need to step up the training at home so that he will be ready for the Advanced Training Class!

Maverick's Intermediate Training class graduation in October. I love how he is too distracted on chewing the hat to actually wear it. |

Does your dog have a fight with the leash when you take him for a walk? Maverick was the worst puppy when he was put on a leash when he was younger. He was always pulling against the leash and I thought he was going to choke himself. People will tell you “they will stop pulling before they choke”, but this still seems like a silly way of training your dog to be a good boy on their leash. Therefore, I am going to recommend an Easy Walk harness. Instead of clipping in the back like most harnesses, Easy Walk harnesses clip in the front. By clipping here, it is a great way to stop your dog from pulling against their leash. IF they do pull, then they are redirected either to their left or to their right depending on which side of their body the leash is on. They are available at PetSmart. Here is an example:
We keep a normal collar on Maverick since we only put him in the harness for walks. If you are in the market for a new collar and leash, I recommend one of these by Harry Barker. Each collar is made of 20 recycled plastic bottles. I love that Harry Barker is doing some good for the environment and they are stylish too!

Monthly Subscription Boxes
I’m sad to hear that Postal Puppy is closing its doors after only a few months. Postal Puppy was a monthly subscription pet toy/treat delivery box similar to BarkBox that would send a box of toys, treats, samples, etc. I wish all the employees of Postal Puppy all the best in their new adventures.
Now I have written about BarkBox in the past because I just love the people there and the service that they provide. Oh, have I mentioned that their boxes are amazing?!? We have been a part of their service for several months and Maverick has loved everything in his boxes so far. But there are many other monthly subscription services that you can sign up for.
Toys4Tails lets you select toys and treats that your dog would like and then sends you a box each month. It costs $14.95 a month or $8.95 per month if you sign up for a whole year.
Best Friend Box is a little more expensive than the other monthly services, but it contains gourmet treats and luxury items (grooming, toys, gear, etc). Their subscription plan costs $45 a month.
Pawalla’s box is full of food, treats, supplements, toys and more. All items are chosen by their nutritionists. It costs $26 a month or $21 a month with an annual subscription.
Bugsy’s Box is full of treats, toys, grooming products, etc. It is $29 a month individually or $17 a month for a 6 month subscription. I am still waiting for an answer Bugsy’s Box because their website says it is $29 CAD, which is Canadian dollars and I’m not exactly sure how what their prices will be in US dollars. Hopefully, I can give you an update once I hear back from Bugsy’s Box.
I wish I could subscribe to ALL of these boxes; however, I can’t because it’s just too expensive to subscribe to all of them. But a girl can still dream…
If you are interested in a monthly subscription service for either your dog or yourself, I suggest you check out this blog. Like me, the author is addicted to subscription boxes and she reviews as many as possible. She breaks down the value of each item in her boxes and then compares the value of each box to how much she paid for the box. Best of all, she includes pictures of her boxes!
Tell me what monthly subscriptions you get each month…

Event Fun!
Whew, did we have one busy Saturday! As you know, my best friend Brandi came to town on Saturday and the three of us took Maverick to the Paws and Claws Expo at the Ladson Fairgrounds. What a fun time! Maverick racked up 2 Frisbees, 5 tennis balls and a whole pile of treats. It must be nice being so cute. We ran into people we knew, and lots of people we didn’t know, but my little social butterfly puppy had a great time with everyone.
Saturday night was the big doggie event in our neighborhood that I have been putting together over the last couple of months. We gathered tons of food for the Pet Helpers shelter and had a blast with the dogs and owners from the neighborhood that made it out to the event. We gave out tons of great prizes and of course the sample boxes, which we ended up calling Swag Bags. All of the dogs got to play together and we met some fun new dogs.
Thank you to everyone that made the events so much fun! Now it is time to rest up and recharge for the next event.

Sample Boxes
For those of you that have been following my blog – and I thank you! – you know that the Doggie Event that I have been planning in my neighborhood is happening this Saturday. Yikes!
Anyway, a very good friend of mine named Katie got married last November and I helped her with some wedding-related things like making wedding wands (for 9 straight hours), making bows (ugh, what a painful process that was), and stuffing candy apples into cellophane bags. With all of that friend credit in hand, I figured it was time to cash some of that help back in. Katie came over to Sunday morning to help me assemble the sample boxes for the event. Thank goodness she came over! We managed to pack up around 100 sample boxes for the doggie event!! Here are some pictures of our apartment with all the fun samples and giveaways.
All the fun stuff is in the dog sample boxes. |
My hallway lined with boxes of samples and coupons. |
The kitchen covered in the sample boxes for the assembly line. |
Cute sticker I made for the top of each box. |
Thanks for all your help Katie!!

Maverick at the Beach!
We had an extremely busy Labor Day weekend. MJ’s family was in town and I love it when they come to town. They just love Maverick to death, so he is showered with love. We ended up taking Maverick to the beach for the first time and he had a ball. He was a little nervous of the waves at first, but then he figured out that he could jump over them. Such a smart puppy!
What I did not know (and I should have done the research) is that salt water can make dogs sick. I love Maverick, but he winds up inhaling a lot of water while he is swimming the ball back after it’s been thrown into the water for him to fetch. He got a little sick from the saltwater he drank, but it wasn’t too bad. I guess he is too used to going to the park where there is fresh water for him to swim in (and consequently drink).
If you live in Charleston and want to take your dog to the beach, I highly recommend Beachwalkers County Park on Kiawah Island. There is a whole section where your dog does not have to be on a leash so they can run and play with other dogs. It does cost $8 to park so be prepared.
Here are some pictures of Maverick’s first trip to the beach that I wanted to share with you!
